The holiday resort Playa Santiago

The beach in Playa Santiago La Gomera

The small fishing village of Playa Santiago belongs to two different municipalities, if you look at it closely. The Barranco de Santiago forms the elongated municipal boundary. The area to the west of the Barranco belongs to Alajeró, everything to the east belongs to the municipality of San Sebastian.

Playa Santiago is located in the south of La Gomera and has just 1.080 inhabitants (as of 2019 according to Wikipedia). Here (almost) always the sun shines, so that you can swim in the sea and enjoy your holiday all year round - even in winter.

At the beginning of the 20th century the small village experienced an economic boom due to the cultivation and shipping of agricultural products such as bananas and tomatoes. For this reason the small harbour was expanded accordingly. At the beginning of the 1990s, however, the town began to focus more on tourism, which was slow to take off, as it was more lucrative and as a result agriculture suffered heavy losses.

The centre of the village is the "Plaza del Carmen" with its high, shady trees. A very special atmosphere, which no visitor can escape, emanates from it: calm, relaxed and serene. The perfect place to relax and recover your soul.

The beach of Playa Santiago has been awarded the "Blue Flag" several times - an award from the "Sustainable Tourism" sector for environmental management service quality and water quality. But be careful, the undercurrents should not be underestimated, especially in the winter months.

There are several good bars, cafés and restaurants. The delicious fresh fish dishes at "Junonia" are particularly recommended here, as are the pizzas at "Don Tomato" on the beach promenade. In the legendary beach bar "La Chalana" people meet with good music and enjoy the sun.

In Playa Santiago there is also one of the most beautiful hotels on the island, the Hotel Jardin Tecina. Here you can also find the only and controversial golf course on La Gomera. Controversial because the grass has to be watered regularly, even though there is already a water shortage on the island! The 4-star Hotel Jardin Tecina was built here at the end of 1987 under the management of the Norwegian shipping company family Olsen. A considerable property on land has been in the hands of the family of the Norwegian shipowner Fred Olsen for many years. He is also the largest employer on the island. The Olsen Group owns the Hotel Tecina, the golf course, the ferries of the shipping company Fred Olsen, the Mirador de Abrante, the restaurant and several other properties.

Since mid-2017 there are also regular and direct ferry connections to the holiday resort Valle Gran Rey and to the capital San Sebastian.

In Playa Santiago you will not find many, but very nice accommodations. You will find a small selection of selected holiday homes in the idyllic fishing village on our website.
