All major Canary Islands have their own airports.

The smaller islands of La Gomera and El Hierro are accessible by ferries from Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas from Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerfe to San Sebastian de La Gomera.

Since september 2017 Fred Olsens "Benchi Express" connects San Sebastian de La Gomera, Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. Also Naviera Armas has a new connetion: Los Cristianos on Tenerife to Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera.

Car Rental

There are several major car rental companies on the island.

We strongly advise you not to book your rental car with a low-cost provider! In case of a breakdown you will often be left alone.

Climatically, the island is separated into the dry south and the moist fertile nothern half. The rain and condensed water is collected in reservoirs. This is distributed to the residents and terraced fields.

Major credit cards are accepted in many shops and restaurants. Every major town has an ATM.

Drinking water

The tap water is drinking water, but tastes of chlorine. It is the purchase of »agua sin gas« (still mineral water) is recommended.

  • 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco
  • 1 liter of spirits (alcohol content about 20%) or 2 liters of wine
    and anything below 20% .
  • 50 grams of perfume or 0.25 l Eau de Toilette.
Eletricity / connector / adapter

Here we usually have 220/230 volt outlets, and of normal size. There are some old sockets, these are about 1mm smaller . There are adapters.

Since september 2017 Fred Olsens "Benchi Express" connects San Sebastian de La Gomera, Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. Also Naviera Armas has a new connetion: Los Cristianos on Tenerife to Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera.

In every community there is at least one Centro de Salud (Health Center) which has a 24 hours service. In San Sebastían is the hospital of the entire island, here is the 24-hour clinic. The emergency number is 112.

Hiking shoes / trekking needs

Found mainly in the sports shops in San Sebastian and in the shop of a great hiking tour in Valle Gran Rey (in La Puntilla and in  La Playa). This has probably the largest selection of appropriate footwear. Basically there is no demand for offering a large selection of brands. As compared with a supplier in mainland Europe. It is therefore essential to check the personal equipment before departure. There is a good assortment of backpacks and hiking clothing in the Valle Gran Rey. You can get good replacement equipment here. (The natives or long-time residents indeed makes all the tours with flipflops - But this is not always recommended for imitation).


The official language is Spanish, in the larger towns you can communicate in English or German.

Open times

Usually, from Monday to Saturday morning from 09.00 to 13.00 hours and Monday-Friday afternoons from 17.00 to 20.00 hours. In touristy places also on Sundays and on public holidays.


Pharmacies can be found in every community. On Sundays and public holidays, an emergency service is offered.


Identity card or passport are accepted as in all of Europe.
Children in Germany need a separate identity card since 1 July 2012 , the entry in the parents' passport is no longer valid.
Nearly all apartments are required at the arrival of the identity cards of all travelers, in order to comply with the local reporting obligation. Bring copies of the identity cards of all travelers to make this process easier.

Pets, dogs and cats that can be taken to the island and are theoretically allowed in some objects. Provided they are small dogs (up to 6 kg) or cats are in appropriate containers, they can usually fly as hand luggage in the cabin. Larger dogs travel in special flight boxes in the hold. The same is for the ferries - all animals are to be transported in appropriate boxes. All dogs and cats need an EU pet passport with the corresponding vaccination (rabies), a veterinarian health certificate and must be microchipped.


Are available in every major town, some shops sell postcards and stamps together. The post offices are open Monday to Saturday from 09.00-14.00 hours. At the post office you can also recharge the prepaid cards (the Spanish). The prepaid card itself can be bought in the Movistar store in San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey.


There is no quarantine for pets.

Refuelling / Fuel Prices

There is a petrol station in every major town. San Sebastian has 2 petrol stations, Hermigua, Vallehermoso, Playa de Santiago, Vallehermoso, Valle Gran Rey and Chipude only one station. The opening times are from 07.00-20.00 hours(at least), on Sundays and public holidays they are usually closed from 14.00 hours. The petrol station in Vallehermoso is closed at Sunday.
Diesel prices are currently about 0.98 EUR, Super (95 octane) 1.07 EUR, Super Plus (98 octane) 1.20 EUR.
A basic rule, always fill up. Nothing worse than an empty tank and waiting at a petrol station that has no fuel and is waiting for the truck from Tenerife.

Rent a bike

There are now in San Sebastian, Playa de Santiago and Valle Gran Rey (there are now 3 )- in La Playa, La Puntilla, and in Vueltas (all in the beach area), prices range depending on length of stay and "vehicle type" between 13 and 20 EUR. Bicycles must be picked up in the store and returned. There is no pick-up and delivery service for individual tours.
Guided bike tours are offered from Valle Gran Rey - you can take the shuttle service to the start of the bike tour (mostly in the higher areas of the island) at the end of the tour, you will be collected and returned to Valle Gran Rey with the shuttle service.

Rent a Scooter

There are in San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey/Vueltas and La Playa. And also in Playa Santiago.The rents are much like a car, at about 20 EUR per day. Up to 3 days, the lender in Playa Santiago will bring you the motobike to your holiday home. The lender in Valle Gran Rey has no pick up and delivery service available. Depending on the season it may be in the higher areas of the island are quite fresh on the moped. One should therefore wear appropriate clothing.

Travel time

The Canaries have throughout the year springlike summer weather due to its equatorial regions and the influence of the Gulf Stream. The winter half year offers pleasant temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees. And even in the summer months it is rarely too hot.

No vaccinations are required or recommended at La Gomera.

The temperatures are spring-like throughout the year, with slightly more precipitation in the winter and slightly lower temperatures are expected, than in the summer. In the north it is a little less hot and dry than in the south of the island.
