Alajeró
The region of Alajeró, mid-south of La Gomera, has almost 600 inhabitants and lies at 800m altitude. The proximity to the National Park "Garajonay" and to Playa Santiago makes Alajeró an ideal starting point for a perfect hiking and bathing holiday. The National Park "Garajonay" with its unique laurel forest is only a few kilometres away. Many other spectacular walks are in the immediate vicinity and it’s only about a 10-minute drive down to the sun-drenched coastal town of Playa Santiago. It’s the warmest place on the island and you can bathe all year round in the Atlantic and enjoy the sun. Playa Santiago has a total of three beaches, one of which is only a short walk away.
Alajeró is a very quiet place. There are a few small bars and shops, a bakery and a good Canarian restaurant - the "Mesón de Clemente", located directly on the main street.
The site is characterized by the "Ermita San Isidro" on the top of “Calvary Hill”. From there you have a fantastic view of the entire southern coast and the quiet landscape.
The Parish church of El Salvador built in 1512 in Alajeró, is definitely worth a visit.
On the beach promenade of Playa Santiago there are some good restaurants, cafés, bars and a few shops and small supermarkets. From July 2017, a ferry line connects the port of Playa Santiago with San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey.
The small island airport is halfway between Alajeró and Playa Santiago. Flights depart twice daily flights from La Gomera to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
