A nice place to stay.

A great base for exploring the island, good communication with Gerlinde - and she helpfully organised a hire car for us (at better rates than we could find online).

Hannes &Julia

The house was really nice, cozy and stylish

The house was really nice, cozy and stylish, it felt like home, it has all equipment that you might need. It also has a cozy terrace for relaxing and a roof terrace with beautiful view. The island and surroundings are beautiful and extraordinary in many ways and the town even has an organic vegan shop, which was a really nice surprise. Thank you so much for extra care and finding us a heater!

Casa Gato surpassed our expectations
Sybo & Han

We enjoyed our 10 day stay in Casa Gato very much. It is a clean and very private house in the quiet Hermigua valley. The house contained everything we needed for a great holiday. One minor thing: if the house were our property, we would glue noise reductors under the heavy dining chairs to avoid loud scratching sounds. But we can't find any other complaints. On the contrary!

La Gomera is our favourite Canarian Island. And Gerlinde Schäfer is the person we would ask again next time to make arrangements. She is very kind and helpful. She even helped us when we had to cancel our trip one day before our holiday, which was planned in January, due to severe illness of my friend's mother. Gerlinde arranged with the house owners that we could come later this year WITHOUT EXTRA COSTS! We feel very grateful for this, both to Gerlinde and to the owners.
Eventually we went to La Gomera in April, and we had a great holiday. We rented a car at Autos Mulagua (Alberto is really very kind), right from where the boat arrives in San Sebastian. We made the most wonderful trips all over the island from Hermigua, where we stayed in Casa Gato.
Our best day was when we went to Arure by car, from where we made a hike down the cliffs to Taguluche. Spectacular views and a spectacular walk, especially climbing back up! We will never forget this holiday. Gerlinde, thank you very much for all your help.

Location in Hermigua

The valley of Hermigua stretches over a distance of about 7 kilometers, the national park in the background, down to the sea.  Nearly 2000 inhabitants are spread over 20 small hamlets scattered on the left and right of the valley.

Since part of the National Park and the hamlet of El Cedro belong to the region, Hermigua is fed all year round by the small river "Rio del Cedro" and is, therefore, the most watery and greenest valley on the whole island.

Hermigua still lives mainly from agriculture - the mostly sunny terraces are planted with bananas, avocados, papayas, mangos, corn potatoes and other vegetables, which can be harvested up to three times a year.

In addition to agriculture, sustainable tourism has developed over the last few years. The guests are usually accommodated in a so-called "Casas rurales" (country houses), or rural self-catering apartments.

In the upper valley, just after entering the village, there is a small supermarket and a very good restaurant,  "Las Chacaras". A little further down is  “Supermarket Hermigua", where you can buy excellent fresh fruit and veg.

The main business takes place in the lower valley, in the immediate vicinity of the main road. Here you will find two bakeries, a supermarket, several banks with cash machines, a tourist information centre, a Community Centre, accessible to all, a pharmacy, medical center, petrol station etc.

Cafés, bars and restaurants can all be found in the vicinity of the main street. For fish lovers, restaurant  "El Faro" is recommended. Restaurant "Telemaco" near the yellow church offers a good menu and occasionally also live music and salsa dancing.  Also the terrace café & tapas bar "Pedro" offers morning rolls and breakfast (baguette bread), homemade cakes and tapas, everything your heart desires!!  And also live music and sometimes karaoke.

Hermigua is a very beautiful and diverse hiking area - from the National Park, El Cedro down to the Playa de la Caleta and further, as well as to the neighboring valley of Los Aceviños and La Palmita, this hike offers the walker a lot of variety and different degrees of difficulty. The pleasant climate here in the north east offers very good conditions for hiking all year round.

In the winter months, the Atlantic is mostly too rough and stormy to swim. This impressive spectacle is better enjoyed from the beach. The nearest bathing beach is in San Sebastían, the journey takes about 25-30mins.  In summer it’s different – you can bathe at Caleta beach or in the natural sea-pool  "Pescante" (the former loading port of Hermigua, it’s a delightful pleasure.

Bus stops are at intervals along the main road, bus line 2 runs between San Sebastían and Vallehermoso, 4x daily,  and in both directions. To get to the south of the island, you have to travel firstly to San Sebastían and change there. Therefore a rental car is absolutely recommended.
